Sophie Bayntun has always sought to express herself visually. Her painting is therefore deeply personal, circling around dreaming, longing and nostalgia. The muted, harmonious palette that grew out of this has become the signature of her work.
Stylistically Sophie is drawn towards abstraction — without giving up the figurative. Character study matters to her, and the desire to capture a likeness in the figures she paints has been a recurring theme throughout her career. The works are painted in oil and acrylic on canvas, mostly in large formats from 80 x 100 to 120 x 120 centimetres.
Time and place are central subjects in her paintings: Sophie draws on past emotional experiences and a life characterised by travel. Today Funchal on Madeira is her base, and collectors reach her directly from there.
